Nancy Wengenack, Ph.D., Elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology

Nancy Wengenack, Ph.D., Director of the Mycology and Mycobacteriology Laboratories and Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Division of Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic, has been elected to a Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.  

Fellows are elected through a highly selective, annual, peer-reviewed process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. The American Academy of Microbiology recognizes excellence, originality, and creativity in microbiology. Each elected Fellow has built an exemplary career in basic and applied research, teaching, clinical and public health, industry, or government service.

Dr. Wengenack works to develop novel, rapid molecular methods for the diagnosis of infections caused by mycobacteria and fungi. Her team makes use of molecular techniques, such as rapid-cycle real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, nucleic acid hybridization probes, and mass spectrometry. They also develop methods for the detection of drug resistance markers in mycobacteria and fungi.
