Scoliosis - Introduce yourself and meet others

Let's talk about living with scoliosis.
As a community moderator of the Bones, Joints & Muscles and Spine Health groups, I've noticed several members talking about scoliosis, but those discussions were scattered throughout the community. I thought I would start this discussion to bring us all together in one place.

Get comfortable in your favorite spot, grab a beverage of your choice, and let's chat. Why not start by introducing yourself?

I am 54 years old, was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 14 and wore a Milwaukee Brace for 3 years. I am interested in how this will affect me as I age and what I can do to stay healthy.

I've been diagnosed with scoliosis at 16 years old, and I am now 45 and my curvature has gotten to 42 degrees now. I have degenerating discs too now. It has gotten soooooo painful! I wake up every morning now with back spasms, it almost feels like the muscles in my spine are highly inflamed. But there seems to be no cure? What exactly can I do? My orthopedic surgeon just tells me to try to swim, and that we will just monitor its further progress every year. I feel so helpless. Meanwhile, I still wake up with the pain every day, it goes all the way down to my hips and legs now. Ouuuuuuccchhh!!! :-(((
What else can I do? I can't imagine living like this until I die ... OMG. 🙁 Helpppp!

Hi Scott,
It sounds like you are writing about back pain in the past tense. Do you still have back pain or have you found relief? How are you managing your pain?

Burt davis. Diagnosed with scoliosis and osteoarthritis about 10 years ago. Progressing and now have no ability to stand for more than 15 minutes. My curve is approaching 55 degrees. Severe radicular pain and weakness in my right leg. Preparing for laminotomy on two levels of my lumbar spine this June at Mayo. Hoping for increased mobility not pain relief. I was walking 18 hole golf courses 2 times each week ten years ago. Now on a good day i can walk about 100 yards.

Hi Burt,
I'm not sure if you read the messages from @vickiekay and @gailb just above in the this discussion thread. They have both have scoliosis and have had laminectomies. What questions might you have for them as you prepare for this procedure?

I'm glad to be a part of this group. I was diagnosed with scoliosis 11 years ago & have undergone two lumbar fusions. My quality of life is improved but my hip pain & posture remain problematic. I still take gabapentinn & tramadol to get through my days. So many activities I would like to participate in but cannot. I'm looking forward to seeing how others have improve their daily lives.
